Students will be able to practice writing short phrases and sentences with these Writing Pages.

ABOUT

Each page has two pictures that indicate a phrase or sentence that students can practice writing. The phrase or sentence is listed on the Writing Overview sheet for teachers to read aloud. Two lines are provided for each phrase/sentence so that students can check their work and rewrite.

These pages use only the letters and sight words that students have practiced with thus far, and all words are ones that they have practiced reading. For extra support, all letters and sight words that students have learned are given in boxes at the top of the sheet.

TIPS & TRICKS

During the first few weeks of practicing to write phrases and sentences, we recommend doing it together as a class using a smartboard if possible. The goal at this point is exposure and most students will need support.

If you'd like to make the exercise more challenging, you can cover up or black out the letters and sight words given at the top of the sheet!

These pages also make a great introduction into the difference between a phrase and a sentence. If needed, these explanations can be short at first, just letting students know when they will need a capital letter and period and when they won't (ex: "This next picture does not represent a sentence, so we will not need to use a Capital Letter or a Punctuation Mark.") However, as students are ready, you can begin introducing the concept of sentences having a complete thought (a subject and verb).
